![]() ![]() ![]() We generally acknowledge the later entries as weaker but because technically they're newer that feeling of 'the later games are worse' might not be shared by new players - the UI in Riven is so dated now that that dampens enjoyment of what is generally otherwise the pinnacle of the series and was incredible at its time (in many ways, it still is) Also doesn't hurt that Uru by this point is larger in explorable area than any other Myst game, there are many ages there to explore!īasically, any ranking is tricky and will not be agreed on by all. But Uru has a future insofar as it is currently open multiplayer and aside from the community in game, fans have finally built a viable pipeline for adding new ages to the game to keep it expanding, and ensure it isn't simply a stagnant game with nothing new to see. Uru (Myst Online) we often forget, actually fared slightly worse from critics than Myst V. It is mainly for those who really liked the rest of the Myst games a lot. But it isn't as solidly good as the rest of the series that preceded it. It isn't outright bad - At the time it was released metacritic's reviews of it were on par with Obduction or Uru, about 75-80% positive. It feels unfinished graphics wise in certain spots, story is thin and not very well told, and mostly it feels tangential to the main Myst series, more connected to Uru really. Myst IV was messy (horrible FMV acting, weird storyline, and various issues with the puzzles) but at least it genuinely looks gorgeous, and Myst V is just sort of a vaguely sad note for the series to conclude with in nearly every area. But the way that it goes about it is confusing and one of the characters does a 180 in terms of their personality. The game for me ties one of the books in really well, and provides some closure. It's probably more fun with the community aspect.Įnd of Ages: EoA is the black sheep of the series, and it's not hard to see why. The movement is dated, but the puzzles are fun and the story is a bit interesting. I wish I could get a time capsule and go back to the busier days of Uru Online, but single player will have to do for now. Plus Haven is almost useless in this regard.) Also, the ending drags on a bit too long, but I do love me some Peter Gabriel. But the puzzles are a bit disjointed (especially since you need information from Spire to finish the game, but this info is obscure and you probably won't remember it. I, for one, enjoy the acting and the accompanying story. Revelations: I used to hate on Revelations, but now I think it has some kinks it could have worked out to make it great. I generally skip Riven when I'm replaying the series.Įxile: Now here's the good stuff! Exile has amazing environments, an intriguing story, a smooth difficulty curve, and Brad Dourif. It drags, some of the environments are confusing to navigate, and it has one of the most pain-in-the-ass puzzles of the whole series. Riven: I'm gonna say some heretical words in this sub, but Riven is overrated. It's short and the replay value is almost non-existent, but it's a classic and I like seeing new players work their way through the ages.
